How to Give Your Home a Summer Atmosphere with These Trending Ideas
Guess what my favorite season of the year is? You probably guessed it…summer!
The windows are open. There’s an incredible breeze coming through. The sun’s out until almost 9pm….yes, yes, and yes!
And then there’s summer decorating. It’s less…and more at the same time. Sounds confusing at first, but it totally makes sense once you get into it.
Read on and I’ll show you exactly how to give your home that summer atmosphere with fresh ideas.
What Creates a “Summer Atmosphere”?
Before we get into the how, I want to cover the what. Because knowing what to change matters more than knowing how to change it.
First things first, put the dark blankets in the closet. Take down the thick curtains. Clear off surfaces that got buried under months of stuff. Once you do that, your home already starts to lighten up. From there, you’re bringing in what summer means to you.
Your version of summer might be seashells and ocean blue. Someone else’s might be sunflowers and lots of warm yellows. The point is your home should look (and feel) like the best parts of the summer. Light, open, and inviting.
Really the common thread is whatever it takes to make your home like a place you’d want to vacation in…even if you’re just making iced coffee on a weekday morning. Like you exhaled and your whole house exhaled with you.
Summer Home Decor Ideas That Are Worth Trying
When it comes to summer home decor ideas, there’s no shortage of inspiration out there. But I wanted to narrow it down to the ones that get it done without a ton of effort.
Warm Neutrals + One Bold Accent
The days of going all-white-everything are fading. The move is warm, earthy neutrals, like sandy beige, warm clay, soft terracotta…combined with one bold summer accent color. For example, rich coral, deep ocean blue, or sunny mustard.
When you put one bold color against a warm neutral backdrop, you get a room that’s summery without looking like a beach themed gift shop.
Natural Materials Everywhere
Driftwood. Raw cotton. Cork. Cane. Unglazed ceramic.
If it looks like it came from nature, I say add it. Natural materials have a relaxing effect. A stone tray on the coffee table, bamboo shade over the windows, a wooden bowl on the kitchen counter. You’ll notice the difference when you walk into the room.
Indoor-Outdoor Flow
More and more people are blurring the line between inside and outside. And you don’t need a fancy open-concept patio door to do it.
It can be as simple as matching your outdoor throw pillows to your living room. Or bringing potted herbs from the patio onto the kitchen counter. Or setting up a little seating nook right next to an open window so it seems like you’re outside.
The idea is that summer belongs inside too.
Organic Shapes Over Sharp Lines
Round mirrors. Curved vases. Wavy edge trays. Soft, organic shapes are showing up everywhere this summer and I get it. Similar to bringing natural materials in, round shapes are more relaxing then super hard edges.
If you’re going to buy one new decor piece this summer, opt for something with curves.
Scent as Decor
Did you know that the way your home smells is part of the atmosphere too? No…I don’t mean the way you smell after you’ve been out at the beach all day. Something pleasant!
Summer scents make me think of something fresh and botanical, e.g., citrus, eucalyptus, coconut, clean linen, or sea salt.
A good candle or a reed diffuser in the right spot can change the entire mood of a room. Easy peasy!
Room-by-Room: Where to Start
You don’t have to touch every room. Pick the ones where you spend the most time and start there.
Your Living Room
It’s time for simple swaps! Swap out your heavier throw pillows for something in a lighter fabric and a summer color. Trade out thick curtains for something sheer. Add a plant or a vase of fresh flowers. If you have a dark blanket draped over the couch, fold it up and put it away until October.
One thing I’ve been loving lately is having a large round mirror on the wall near a window. It bounces light around the room and makes everything feel twice as open.
Your Kitchen
Now we move on to your kitchen. Place a bowl of bright fruit on the counter and some herbs on the windowsill. Get out those light dish towels. Maybe some colorful tumblers or glassware you don’t normally pull out.
If you have open shelving, style them with a few summer pieces. Some examples are a ceramic pitcher, a cookbook propped up, a small plant. It gives the kitchen personality without adding clutter.
Your Bedroom
Less is more in your bedroom during summer. Swap to lightweight cotton or linen bedding. Pull back all those layers. Clear off your nightstand so it’s just a lamp, a candle, and perhaps a book.
The goal is to walk into your bedroom and feel like you’re checking into a breezy vacation rental. Airy, simple, and calm.
Your Bathroom
People forget about the bathroom! But it’s one of the easiest rooms to spruce up. A new set of light-colored towels, a eucalyptus bundle hanging from the showerhead (you’re welcome!), and a simple plant on the counter.
Five minutes and your bathroom is now a spa.
Outdoor Areas
Even if you have a tiny balcony, put it to work! Place an outdoor rug to define the space. Add a couple of throw pillows. String some lights for the evening. Put a container garden with some flowers.
The point is to create a reason to go out there, sit, and enjoy.
Updates You Can Do This Weekend
Not ready for a total home makeover? Totally fine! Here are some quick and simple things you can do:
Lighten your fabrics
Trade out a set of heavy curtains, one chunky blanket, or one set of dark pillow covers.
Add something alive
A plant, a bunch of flowers from the store, a few succulents. Something green and growing makes any room feel more like summer.
Let the light in
Pull back the curtains. Open the blinds all the way. Yes, all the way! If you’ve got a window you usually keep covered, uncover it. Natural light changes everything.
Pick one surface and simplify it
A coffee table, a dresser top, a bathroom counter. Clear it off and style it with one or two summer pieces (e.g., a candle, a pretty bowl).
Bring the outside in
Grab a few natural elements (e.g., a piece of driftwood, some shells from a trip) and work them into a shelf or a table. It’s subtle but it works.
